Exhausted: Beyond tired

I’ve learnt a tough lesson. My mind and body has 100% to give, so if I take 60% for work stress, 60% for battling with the Planning Department for two years, 50% in coping with raising children, 25% for house repairs and DIY and 50% on my marriage, trying to leave the house to blast 50Km in a couple of hours in the crap UK weather is just not going to happen. Factor in poor sleep and eating habits, and I’ve ‘bonked’ before I’ve put one foot on the pedal. Cycling training requires at least 25% of my life, and proper eating and sleeping requires another 10%. That leaves just 65% for everything else. Bugger.

Recently I got a serious warning from my GP that I have Adrenal Burnout. Just a few weeks of remedial behaviour and a ‘short’ easy bike ride out, after almost two months of not being on a bike, saw me smash a PB easy, which at maximum intensity I couldn’t get near in February this year. I have been really shocked by this. I had no idea endless work/home stress could erode ‘fitness’ so much. A warning to all those who think they can burn the candle at both ends - it will meet in the middle at some point.
