1400km in 120hrs Endurance Cycling Event

cen.jpgThe Event On the 26th July 2009 I will be taking part in the UK’s toughest cycling long distance event (open to the public), the LEL 2009. Route map now updated for 2009 event.

Follow my progress during the LEL Event via Twitter: http://twitter.com/mpolaine

LEL stands for ‘London to Edinburgh to London’ and is the premier Audax UK Event, held every four years. The aim is to cycle the 1,400km within 120 hours.

This will require 280Km of cycling everyday, for five days, including through the night and with minimal support. For those supporting me, you can view my training calendar.

You can also see how much cycling I am doing compared to driving in the graphic link below, but I have to update this manually every few months:

Objectives My primary goal is just to finish the event, with a secondary goal of completing the event within 120 hrs. I also aim to raise more than £1,400 - at least £1 per kilometre.

The Charity Orchid is the only UK registered cancer charity to focus entirely on the male-specific cancers.

Male-specific cancers have a far lower media profile, maybe because men find it difficult to discuss these issues. Orchid aims to overcome these barriers, help save lives and suffering caused by these diseases through funding medical research and promoting awareness about them.

Surveys suggest that many men are unaware of male-specific cancers or prefer to ignore them with only 5% of men regularly checking themselves.

The Rider I will be nearly 43 in July 2009 and beat cancer in 1996. Without research into male cancers I may not have been here today.

Supporting Me Donating through this page is simple, quick and secure. It is the most efficient way to give so every donation goes further and if you are a UK taxpayer and give Gift Aid consent the charity will receive an extra 28% at no cost to you.

Simply click on Make A Donation to enter your card details on a secure web page. Please make sure you select the Gift Aid box!

Thank you for your support - Matt

The final amount raised for The Orchid Charity was £1,150.70, just £249.30 short of my target £1 per kilometre of £1,400, however I did ‘only’ manage 821.6km, but I stress 722 of those kilometres was done in just 57hrs before I cycled into a tornado at midnight in Cumbria…
